Meet Delia Orosco

Whitworth Cadre One
'07 Graduate (B.A. Political Science)

Henry Foss High School '03

family was the focus

"Family was the focus." To Delia Orosco there was and is nothing more important than the well-being of her family. The well known and well respected Henry Foss student excelled in her classes, played sports and moved quickly through the ranks of AFJROTC reaching the rank of Lt. Colonel as the 2002 - 2003 Group Commander. She originally thought she would become a Judge Advocate General in either the Navy or the Air Force, but knew that she would find herself back in the city of Tacoma to be with family. As an Act Six scholar, Delia has developed a greater understanding of the gifts she has to offer her city and the people in it – realizing that she not only wants to return to Tacoma for her family, but to help contribute to the community.

The need of the community

"Act Six has given me a new frame of mind [in which] to view the world and think in terms of community and not just individual need." At Whitworth College, away from her family, Delia found coping with homesickness to be one of her biggest hurdles. With support from friends, Delia used her struggles as fuel to make a difference on campus. Committed now to seeing the need to help not just family and friends, but the community at large, Delia, as Whitworth first Cultural Events Coordinator has worked to create the Multicultural Advocacy Council. Under this position she has presented the first Multicultural Awareness Week and Cultural Club Leadership Fair to the campus. Delia's activity on campus was the product of a passion that has always lived inside her.

The need of the city

Delia has always found herself interested in the injustices suffered by those in an underrepresented community. She is passionate about becoming an attorney who serves the needs of those in areas that need good lawyers but do not often get them. This desire, aligned with the vision of Act Six, has pushed her to work hard as a political science major so that she may return to Tacoma and invest in the future of her community.
