Whitworth University

Whitworth, associated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), is among a select group of educational institutions known for both academic rigor and Christian commitment. The Whitworth faculty is committed to encouraging open intellectual inquiry as well as respect for diverse points of view.  Since 1890, Whitworth has held fast to its founding mission of providing “an education of mind and heart” through rigorous intellectual inquiry guided by Christian scholars. In all endeavors, the university seeks to advance its founder’s mission of equipping students to “honor God, follow Christ and serve humanity.”

Are all faculty Christian?  Yes.  All faculty and staff members are committed to the Christian faith.  All believe in the authority of scripture and have personal relationships with Jesus Christ.  Faculty and staff, from various denominations, demonstrate their faith in various ways.  Many attend Chapel, pray for and with students, attend various events on campus and mentor students through expressions of their faith.

Are all student Christian?  No. Whitworth believes in diversity of thought and ideas. Students are not required to be Christian, therefore allowing open discussion on many topics. Students are not required to attend Chapel or sign a statement of faith. We believe it is up to each individual to develop, nurture and express their religious beliefs. While it is not a requirement of students to be Christian, approximately 70% of the students are involved is some aspect of the Christian dimension on campus.

Are their any required Bible or religious classes or activities?  Yes.  A  Biblical Literature class is required for graduation.  All other religious activity and coursework is optional.

   
Pacific Lutheran University

At PLU, our Lutheran heritage calls for a commitment to academic excellence, academic freedom and a learning atmosphere where all perspectives on faith and reason are expressed openly. Are all faculty Christian?  No.

Are all student Christian?  No.

Are their any required Bible or religious classes or activities?  Yes.  Two religion courses are required as part of the Core Curriculum.  Students are required to choose two courses out of the following three categories: Biblical Studies, Christian Thought, History and Experience, Integrative and Comparative Religious Studies.  All other religious activities and coursework are optional.

   
Northwest University

Northwest University is a distinctly Christian university, impacting a student’s experience in the classroom, residence halls, and all facets of their time at NU. In the classroom, professors desire to integrate faith and learning, while campus life activities are motivated by a desire to encourage the development of community. Chapel takes place three times a week and is a required activity for all students. Our mission is to provide, in a distinctly evangelical Christian environment, quality education to prepare students for service and leadership. NU is sponsored by the Assemblies of God denomination, and 40% of the undergraduate student population comes from Assemblies of God background with the other 60% of students from all other Christian denominations.

Are all faculty Christian?  Yes.  All faculty at NU are Christians; demonstrated by signing a faith statement as well as living a Christian lifestyle.

Are all student Christian?  Yes.  All students at NU are Christians; demonstrated by submitting pastoral and Christian friend references, along with writing about their faith in a biographical essay.

Are their any required Bible or religious classes or activities?  Yes.  Students are required to complete a core group of biblical and theological courses that total 15 credits. In addition, students participate in chapel three times each week.

   
Gonzaga University

As part of Gonzaga University’s commitment to holistic education, Gonzaga emphasizes the importance of spiritual development as much as academics and social life.  The college experience is about self-exploration; your faith can play a major role in discerning who you are and how your talents can have a positive impact on others.

Are all faculty Christian?  No.  Jesuit philosophy respects many different religious traditions.  While the majority of faculty members are Christian, we also have professors from a range of religious backgrounds.

Are all student Christian?  No. Jesuit philosophy encourages students to explore their spiritual paths, and we encourage that through both student life and required courses in Religious Studies and Philosophy.

Are their any required Bible or religious classes or activities?  Yes.  Religious Studies and Philosophy courses are required at GU.  Students will take three Religious Studies courses and four Philosophy courses including Critical Thinking, Human Nature, Ethics and an elective.  All other religious activity and coursework is optional.

   
Trinity Lutheran Colege

Trinity’s mission is to train Christ-centered leaders for service to the church and the world. Through academic and devotional study of the Bible, rigorous academics in your field, and service learning and internships in the greater community, you will be trained to see your work serving others as service to God. Trinity is non-denominational, but was founded by Lutheran Christians who believe and teach that God offers grace to all people through Jesus Christ, and that the best way to serve God in any field is to serve people according to Jesus’ example.  

Are all faculty Christian?  Yes.  All faculty sign the Lausanne Covenant, a statement of agreement on Christian doctrine and the mission of the church.

Are all student Christian?  No. No faith statement is required from students.

Are their any required Bible or religious classes or activities?  Yes.  Trinity requires 24 credits of Biblical Studies, called the Trinity Biblical Core. Chapel is encouraged but not required.  Students sign a Christian conduct covenant.
